KTown Cowboys

*****

Take one part mold-breaking creativity, add one part youthful mastery of new internet media, then stir in a generous spoonful of Korean American attitude, and you have the recipe for KTown Cowboys.  This web series is one of the most successful of its kind to hit YouTube, generating approximately 140,000 views so far for each of its nine episodes (plus one bonus episode).  Written by Danny Cho and directed by Daniel DPD Park, the series centers on the fast-paced partying lifestyle of young Koreans in present-day Los Angeles’ “KTown”.  The story spans one wild Friday night as seen from the viewpoint of character John Kim, who moves to LA from Virginia and promptly finds himself swept up in his cousin Jason’s world of all-Korean night clubs, drinking, fighting, and singles hookups.  This comes as quite a surprise to Kim, who represents the stereotypical “model minority” Asian American male.  Although not many details are revealed about his background, viewers get the impression that Kim was raised in a quiet town without much knowledge of or pride in his heritage, and little confidence in approaching women.  Through the antics of his cousin and friends, he’s introduced to both old-school Korean customs of respect, and the modern-day boldness with which young KTown residents are breaking the boundaries historically imposed by some of their more confining cultural mores.  KTown Cowboys aims to shatter common misconceptions about stereotypical Asian Americans, and show the world how life is changing for the younger generations by sheer force of attitude.  The series has even spawned a full-length feature movie, currently in the works after the founders once again effectively used the internet to raise nearly $14,000 in funding via Kickstarter’s platform for fan donations.

Lumina

*****

Are there other worlds beyond what we perceive on the surface?  Is it possible to interact with beings from those realms, and perhaps even cross between them?  How might the actions of beings in these alternate realities affect our lives, without most of us even knowing it?  These are the questions posed by Lumina, a 9-episode web series written and directed by Jennifer Thym, out of Hong Kong.  The answers to those questions are somewhat indirect, being left up to interpretation by the audience’s clearly assumed intelligence.  Viewers are led through an entertaining mixture of romantic fantasy and psychological/conspiracy thriller, all set among the lushly shot backdrops of Hong Kong.  The title character, Lumina, is a lonely young working woman just coming out of a relationship break-up, when she suddenly begins seeing and speaking with the handsome Ryder in her apartment mirrors and other reflective surfaces.  Before long, she becomes torn between fear of his mysterious and potentially dangerous world, and the lure of love and companionship that he offers.  The last episode seems to end with an opening for a sequel or subsequent season, though none has yet come forth since the series premier in 2009.  To date, Lumina has received eleven online video awards and nominations, including The Webby Awards Official Honoree for Editing; a Streamy Awards nomination for Best Cinematography; six Indie Soap Awards nominations, including for Best Writing and Best Directing; and three American Soap World Awards nominations.  Read more of the series back story and other details here:
